Custom E-Commerce in Days, Not Months
The Challenge
Gilded Tiers sells handcrafted tiered trays — decorative serving pieces, event centerpieces, and home decor. The kind of product that looks terrible in a generic Shopify template with a white background and default fonts.
The owner had been selling through Etsy and social media. That works until it doesn't. Platform fees eat into margins, you don't own the customer relationship, and you're competing for attention with everyone else on the marketplace. She needed her own storefront — something that matched the quality of what she was making.
The usual options: hire an agency ($15-30K, 2-3 months), wrestle with Shopify themes and plugins (ongoing monthly cost, limited customization), or build on WordPress/WooCommerce (fragile, plugin-heavy, maintenance headache). None of those felt right for a small business that just needed a clean, fast, professional store.
Our Approach
| Day | What Got Built |
|---|---|
| 1 | Project setup, product catalog schema, storefront layout with responsive product grid and detail pages |
| 2 | Stripe integration — full checkout flow, payment processing, order creation |
| 3 | Shippo shipping — rate calculation at checkout, label generation for fulfillment |
| 4 | Admin dashboard — product CRUD with variants (sizes, colors), image uploads to S3, order management and fulfillment workflow |
| 5 | Polish, mobile optimization, deploy to production, client walkthrough |
Every piece was built to fit this specific business. Product variants mapped to how she actually sells (size and style combinations). The admin panel was designed for one person managing inventory, not an enterprise team with approval workflows.
The Outcome
A complete e-commerce operation, live and taking orders:
- Product catalog with variant support (sizes, colors, pricing per variant)
- Stripe checkout — secure payments, order confirmation emails
- Shippo shipping — real-time rate calculation, label printing from the admin panel
- Image management — multiple product images per item, hosted on S3
- Admin dashboard — add/edit products, manage inventory, fulfill and track orders
- Responsive design — looks right on phone, tablet, and desktop
- No monthly platform fees — she owns the site, the data, and the customer list
| Feature | Shopify | Custom Build |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $39-399/mo + transaction fees | Hosting only |
| Design control | Template-limited | Complete |
| Shipping integration | Plugin ($20-40/mo) | Built in |
| Timeline | Weeks of theme fighting | 5 days |
| Data ownership | Platform-dependent | Full |
Why This Worked
- Custom doesn't mean slow. With the right tools and a clear scope, a purpose-built store can ship faster than configuring an off-the-shelf platform.
- No plugin tax. Every Shopify store ends up with 8-12 plugins, each with a monthly fee and a chance of breaking on update. Building it in means fewer moving parts.
- Admin designed for one person. The dashboard does exactly what the owner needs and nothing more. No training required — she was managing products the same day it launched.
- Ownership matters. No platform lock-in, no algorithm changes, no competing with other sellers for visibility. Her store, her customers, her data.
